The acquaintance of students with the "Classics" in all rungs of modern education.

In the current age it is considered regression the pursuit of students in the classics and what is called the "Studies of Humanity". The culture that is produced today  ( technical as it is called by certain, or digital  by others), tends to lose its contact with its starting point. If however it loses this contact  ( its continuity that is to say ), then it is not going to be long before, that humanity will produce fragmentary culture.

The acquaintance of students with the classics, from the first rungs of education, will not help only as a tool of improvement of human behavior, but at the same time it will also help as a technical tool for improvement of productivity in the science selected by the student in the higher rungs of education.

For a person the comprehension of "PAN METRON ARISTON" (All Things In Moderation ) is an entire philosophy where it places the limits of his behavior in all expressions of his life.

Let us see however the subject more concretely:

WHY OUR EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM INCLUDES ( or, SHOULD INCLUDE ) THE TEACHING of the CLASSICS?

We give epigrammatically, certain examples of application of classic thought in the higher rungs of education:

LAW AND ECONOMIC SCIENCES: As strange as it appears, in Thukydides we find a lot of ideas and methods and we are taught the handling of situations, like those that are faced in majority by modern enterprises. Demosthenes, Lysias, Isokratis and so many others will be exceptionally useful in the young students of legal sciences. We cannot ignore here, the equivalent others, during the roman times. After all, to them we owe the current frame of public right in the western societies.

POLITICAL SCIENCES: Itself the political thought was given birth during the Homeric years and was developed in classic years. The study of poets from the Homer up to the Aristophanes is a most excellent guide. The establishment of the democratic system is product of political dialogue as it was shaped from the era of Homer up to that of Alexander the Great.

MATHEMATICS AND PRACTICAL SCIENCES: Here the pointing out is all known. From Thales and Pythagoras up to Heronas and Archimedes, intervene all those that have formulated the basic and insuperable initial stages on which the current scientists are based, for the development of their theories, but also to apply them in the practice.

ARTS: The study of expressions of art at the classic era, does not only cause the admiration for the perfection of technique, but to us it confirms that the craftsman of that era, had most excellent acquaintance of the mathematic science and not only this. The same observation we will make, studying the poets or the writers.

MEDICINE: Hippocrates, Galinos and the emphasis that was given in the prevention, perhaps it will help today, how to view the patient under different approach. Visiting the Museum of ancient Epidaurus (where also famous Sanctuary of Asklepios is located ), the visitor will be surprised of  to see the collection of the medical tools. Perhaps they will realize that these do not differ a lot from today’s medical tools.

Taking under consideration the above, it cannot be claimed that the The acquaintance of students with the “Classics”, is the return to the past. No. This proposal would be indeed regression, or utopistic in the best case.

The objective is to learn about the past, and with the principals that were introduced by the classics, to head to the future. The improvements will emanate from this activity. No one can support that the then life was ideal. However, can our own life be improved today, through our acquaintance with the classics ?
